The Good Samaritan

Verses Covered
Bible - Luke 10:25-37
Spark Bible - pages 360 to 365

Those of you with good memories will remember that we've already covered this passage this year - but the message is such a good one that we're bringing it back (plus it was a really low attendance Sunday when we did it!).   So, we turn once more to the parable of the Good Samaritan.  What is a parable?  Simply put, a parable is a short story that illustrates a teaching or lesson.  They are related to fables – albeit involving humans rather than animals – and are in the broader family of analogies (the Greek word   parabole actually does mean ‘analogy’).  Jesus’ parables – and this parable of the Good Samaritan in particular – are the best known examples, but parables were used in philosophy and other disciplines as well.  Part of the reason they were used was that they have a remarkable “stickiness” – human beings have an excellent memory for story, but not numbered lists!  When Jesus taught in parables, people listened – but, most importantly, they understood.
