The Ascension

Verses Covered
Bible - Acts 1:1-11
Spark Bible - pages 498 to 499

We’ll be in the season of Eastertide for the reminder of our church year, as we cover the growth of the early church in Acts and spend some time learning about Paul.  This Sunday, though, we return to the surprise appearance of Jesus to the disciples – only to be followed by a surprising disappearance! Jesus Ascension has long been a tricky passage for students: most kids want to talk about how Jesus is flying, but this passage actually has much more to do with Jesus giving the disciples the responsibility and authority to spread his message around the world (and also some echoes of Elijah’s ascension in 2 Kings).  It may seem like a strange passage to begin our Eastertide season, but thinking about our responsibility as disciples is actually a great place to start!
