Discussing the TED Talk
In your small group, please discuss the following:
- Share your names, where you live, and your children’s ages
- Do you have any weekly routines/traditions as a family? What are they?
- In the talk, Bruce Feiler references a study in which 1,000 kids were asked: “If you were granted one wish about your parents, what would it be?” What do you think your child would answer? (The #1 answer is in the video!)

- Feiler shares what he feels are the three planks of family programming:
- Adapt all the time (be flexible/open minded about family routines)
- Empower your children (they plan goals, set schedules, assess work)
- Tell your story (identify core values, family mission statement)
- How might you incorporate some of these ideas into your family’s daily or weekly life? What practices have you found to be helpful with your family?
- We often make our faith an important part of our individual stories – how can we incorporate faith into the story that we tell about our family?
