Maundy Thursday
Verses Covered
Bible - Luke 22:14-23
Spark Bible - pages 462 to 467
Today, we arrive at one of the most bittersweet days of our church calendar: Maundy Thursday and Jesus’ Last Supper with the disciples. Although occasionally confused by kids as “Monday Thursday”, as well as being the subject of some etymological debates, the word maundy is widely believed to first have its roots in the Latin word mandatum or ‘commandment’ – connected to Jesus’ washing the disciples’ feet. Maundy Thursday is a complicated day liturgically – the day’s events are both inspiring and saddening – and your discussions may reflect that as you cover what happened with the kids. Jesus' example of servant leadership, his call to love others, and him sharing the meal that is the origin of communion make this night a beautiful encapsulation of much of Jesus' ministry - but his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane also reminds us that we are nearing Jesus' final earthly hours.
