Lenten Fish Banks
Although the "Fish Bank" is a particularly Presbyterian thing, using the season of Lent to collect loose change for a particular cause is certainly common in other denominations as well. In the PC(USA), the use of the fish has a couple of different meaning - one is that fish were a common symbol used by early Christians to identify one another, and the other is that the fish is a reminder of the "loaves and fishes" miracle in which a donation that didn't seem like much (5 loaves of bread and 2 fish) was somehow able to feed 5,000 people. In a similar fashion, our donations of loose change may not seem like much, but collected throughout the season of Lent, and through the donations of others, we do more good than we can imagine.
Prior to your child starting a collection during Lent, I encourage you to set a fundraising goal by looking at a catalog that lists out ways that we can help in our world. I am partial to the Presbyterian Giving Catalog, but there is certainly no shortage of good options out there.
