Verses Covered
Bible - Isaiah 7:13-16
Spark Bible - pages 168 to 171
Devotion: When I was growing up, my mom had (and still has) a HUGE Nativity scene under the Christmas tree. There was the usual scene: a stable, Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus, the three wise men, and an angel. She also had shepherds, a flock of sheep, camels, goats, children carrying fruit baskets-everything you could possibly imagine was under that tree! I always loved sitting on the floor by the tree, rearranging all of the figures in the scene. I also always took the baby Jesus, and hid him. I would get up very early on Christmas morning and place him back in his bed of straw. This made my mom mad, of course, but I liked the anticipation of the baby appearing in the Nativity scene early Christmas morning.
These Bible verses remind me of my little tradition that I had. Isaiah tells us that a child will be born and be called Immanuel, which means “God with us.” He tells us that this child will be a Wonderful Counselor, a Mighty God, the Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. The Israelites waited years and years for God’s promise of Immanuel’s birth. Imagine their anticipation! They were very faithful to God, and God showed them God’s great love. All of these names remind us that God loves us and is always with us.
Question: What are some words that you can think of to describe the love that God has for us?
Prayer: Loving God, thank you for always being with us, no matter where we are. Thank you for your constant love and care. Amen.
