Devotion: The little boy hated waiting. And it seemed like he was doing a lot of it lately! “I don’t WANT to wait until after dinner to eat dessert!” “I don’t WANT to wait until next week to go to the birthday party!”
One day he awoke to find two beautifully wrapped packages at the foot of his bed, with a note that said, “Open these when you are ready.” He tore eagerly into the first package, found a beautiful model airplane kit, and immediately set to work. But there were too many tiny little pieces that got lost and too many big words in the instructions that he couldn’t read, and try as he might he couldn’t turn it into anything but a pile of plastic. Discouraged, he went outside to play.
When he went to bed that night he picked up the second package, but then he looked over at the pile on his desk and thought, “Maybe I’ll wait.” Over the next year, and the year after that and the year after that he would look at the package, look at the pile, and think, “Not yet.”
The day finally came when the boy looked at the package, looked at the now dusty pile of plastic pieces, and thought, “I’m ready.” Slowly, carefully, he opened the box and found another model airplane kit. This time the pieces came together as if by magic, and before he knew it he had built an airplane more beautiful than anything he could have imagined. He took it outside, and as he watched it fly his face lit up with joy and wonder.
Like the shepherds, we have waited and prepared, and now we are ready to receive fully God’s greatest gift. We wish you the joy and wonder of the shepherds this Christmas Day.
Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for Jesus. He has given us brightness and beauty. We have been waiting for a long time, and we give you thanks for the Savior. Amen.
