December 24
Verses Covered
Bible - Luke 2:1-20
Spark Bible - pages 212 to 217
Devotion: It was very cold outside. Joseph had a hard time finding a place for Mary and him to stay in Bethlehem – every hotel was full. Thankfully an innkeeper let them stay in his backyard stable with his animals.
There are a lot of families in Chicago that do not have a home – they do not have a warm place to live, sleep, study, play or be safe. Every day they are like Joseph, walking through the streets of Chicago looking for a place to stay and a meal to eat – a lot of people keep telling them no, just as Joseph felt. Some homeless in Chicago come to Fourth Church to worship and eat.
On the night Jesus was born, the angels said to not be afraid. They had good news – news that the special child that God promised had been born.
Jesus was not born in a hospital, a hotel, or a big house – he was born in a basic stable. It was warm, safe, and soon filled with a lot of people and animals that loved him. This Christmas let us not be afraid to include everyone around us so they are not alone, cold, or afraid.
Question: How would you feel if you did not have your bedroom to sleep or play in? What if you had to sleep outside every night?
Prayer: Glory to God in the Highest – Jesus is born! Thank you Lord for the gift of a warm and safe bedroom this Christmas. Let us pray that everyone in Chicago can soon have a warm, safe place to live and sleep. Amen.
