Verses Covered
Bible - Luke 1:57-79
Spark Bible - pages 209 to 211
Devotion: Have you ever been really, really excited about something, and just couldn’t wait to tell your friends and family about it? I know that I have, many times! I asked my daughter this question when we sat down to read this passage in the Spark Bible. She told me a story about how excited she was when she had a loose tooth for the first time. “I wanted to tell all of my friends and teachers about it! I was so happy!” In our Bible story, Zechariah has one of these moments. Early on in the passage, he isn’t able to speak. When he is finally able to, he tells everyone the exciting news of who is son John will be, and also gives of prophecy of who Jesus will be. It is a beautiful blessing to read, and I can feel the happiness and excitement in Zechariah’s words. Can you?
Zechariah also had to be very patient before he could tell everyone his exciting news. He had to wait for the birth of his son, and had to wait to be able to speak, both of which would be pretty hard to be patient about! Advent is a quiet time when we wait for the birth of Jesus. And waiting sure takes a lot of patience!
Let us practice being patient during Advent, and prepare to shout the joyful new of Jesus’ birth on Christmas Day!
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the exciting and happy times that we have in our lives, for the loving friends and family that we have to share these times with. Help us to be patient during this season of Advent, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus! Amen.
