Devotion:  Parents are probably the only ones who will know the tune, but in his song The Waiting, singer Tom Petty wrote that “the waiting is the hardest part”.  We are just beginning this season of Advent and it already feels like the wait for Christmas is taking way too long!  Waiting really is the hardest part, waiting for presents and family visits and, most importantly, waiting for a chance to celebrate Jesus’ coming into the world.

In our reading today – a reading that took place hundreds of years before Jesus was born – the prophet Isaiah made a promise to the people of Israel that someday God would send a Messiah to the people, and he imagined a world in which everyone would live in peace.  If we think waiting less than a month is bad, just think about how hard it was for the people of Israel to wait!  But even though it was hard, they trusted that God’s promises would come true – just like we do today – and they did whatever they could to help make those promises come true, too.

Question:  Is it hard for you to wait for things to happen?  What might help you be more patient?

Prayer: Dear God, help me be patient as I wait for your Son, your peace, and your love to fully arrive in this world – and help me show your peace and love to others.  Amen.
