Day 40 - Holy Saturday
Bible Verses: Luke 23:26-49
Spark Bible: The Day Jesus Died (p.476)
Devotion: A little over a year ago, our beloved cat, Sebastian, died. He'd been a member of our family for many years and we were very sad when he died. A member of our family was no longer with us. If there had been some way to magically prevent Sebastian's death, we would have done it in a second.
When we read this passage in Luke, we thought about how very, very sad God must have been that Jesus died. In fact, he was so sad that he made the sun stop shining! Jesus was God's very own son, a member of his family, and we know that God loved him very, very much. God didn't need magic in order to prevent Jesus' death. All he had to do was say the word, and Jesus would have been spared. And yet, as much as God loves Jesus, he loves us so much that God allowed him to die. God knew that Jesus had to die to save us from our sins.
Reflection: God loves us so much that he allowed his only beloved son to die to save us from our sins. What are things we can do to show how thankful we are for that wonderful sacrifice?
Prayer: Dear God, when sad things happen, help me trust in you. Thank you for sending Jesus to save us. Amen.
