Day 4 - Saturday
Bible Verses: Matthew 7:24-29
Spark Bible: House on the Rock (p.282)
Devotion: We read this verse from Matthew over dinner. I began with a little context for our kids, explaining that Jesus had just been baptized and moved to Galilee to begin teaching anyone who would listen. Before I could move on, my son interrupted to tell us that his teacher asked the 4th and 5th graders this question: Why did people follow Jesus?
My husband, who is familiar with the verse, said, “Well, there’s your devotion.” He then got up to clear the dishes.
So why did people leave their homes and families to follow Jesus? Why did crowds gather to see and listen? Why do we, more than 2,000 years later, devote our lives to the message he preached?
The answer reveals itself every time we act on what Jesus preached. If you don’t believe me, go out and perform a selfless act of love for another and notice how it makes you feel. Maybe the crowds who gathered in Galilee to hear Jesus were astounded not by the fact that he spoke with authority, but because he spoke a truth that people could put to the test.
Prayer: God, thank you for Jesus and all who became followers of his message.
