Day 39 - Good Friday
Bible Verses: Luke 23:26-49
Spark Bible: The Day Jesus Died (p.476)
Devotion: We all love stories about super heroes, where they use their “special powers” or “weapons” to save the world. Good is always stronger than evil and love wins out over hate. We cheer for the super heroes and feel so good when they are successful.
As Christians, Jesus is our super hero. Instead of using powers that would make the world say, “Wow!” Jesus used his “creative weapon of love” to save us. He cared so much about the suffering and separation from God that sin causes for us, that he decided to take it on himself.
Jesus’ life is our perfect example. His death is hard to read and think about, but without it, we would have to pay the penalty for our own sins. One of the criminals being crucified next to Jesus admitted his bad deeds and asked Jesus to remember him. Jesus responded to him with a promise that is also ours if we choose to claim it: “Truly, I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
Good Friday makes us feel very thankful (in a quiet, humble sort of way) that Jesus did such a hard thing, just for us. He took everyone’s sin and died with all of it. He took all the bad of this world and made it so the bad does not matter anymore.
Reflection: What Jesus did for us on Good Friday, without causing a fuss, is so awesome! Think of ways you can say thank you by sharing his love with others.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, help us to be more like you every day, using your love to heal the world. Thank you for promising to stay with us. Amen.
