Day 35 - Monday of Holy Week
Bible Verses: Luke 22:47-53
Spark Bible: Jesus is Betrayed (p.468)
Devotion: Stories about superheroes are a big deal in our family. Our dad grew up reading comic books and watching superhero movies and has passed that on to our oldest. Mom has come to enjoy them too and our youngest probably doesn’t have much of a chance to avoid them when he gets older.
In every one of these stories, a “good guy” fights a “bad guy” in order to protect innocent people and save the day. Our oldest likes to pretend that he’s a superhero fighting bad guys. He has a bunch of cool moves he likes to show off and even has two pretend swords that he sometimes uses.
So we understood when Jesus’ friends wanted to use their swords to protect Jesus from the bad guys coming to arrest him. But we were surprised that Jesus told them to stop and wondered why he didn’t want them to do what our favorite superheroes do all the time.
Maybe Jesus believes that if we fight bad guys like they fight us we are no better than them. Instead, Jesus wants us to confront our enemies with love and peace.
Reflection: How do you think Jesus wants you to respond when someone does something bad to you?
Prayer: Dear God, please help me with bad people. Please turn bad people into good people. Amen.
