Day 34 - Saturday
Bible Verses: Luke 22:47-53
Spark Bible: Jesus is Betrayed (p.468)
Devotion: One of the saddest things that can happen is when someone who you thought was your friend turns out to not be a friend at all. I hope that this hasn’t happened to you, but I’m sure that some of you know how this feels. You feel very hurt and confused, and it really doesn’t seem very fair.
In this passage, one of Jesus’ disciples – a man named Judas – turns out to not be a friend of Jesus after all. He helps some people who are angry with Jesus’ teachings to find him, and because of this Jesus will later be put on trial and will die. It’s a very sad passage because we can imagine how hurt Jesus felt – why would Judas do this?
Sometimes people do things that we don’t understand and that can make us feel bad. But we remember what Jesus taught and what Jesus shows in this passage: even when someone does something that hurts us, we shouldn’t try to hurt them back. Instead, we trust that love is stronger than hate – and we try to live our lives filled with that love.
Reflection: Why do you think Judas helped the people who were mad at Jesus? What would you have done if you were Jesus?
Prayer: Dear God, we are very sad about how Judas treated Jesus in this story. Please help us to treat people in a way that shows them respect. Amen.
