Day 31 - Wednesday
Bible Verses: Luke 19:41-48
Spark Bible: The Chief Priests (p.460)
Devotion: Overturning tables? Making people leave the temple? This passage can be very surprising to us because we aren’t used to Jesus being angry with people. I think when most of us think about Jesus, we think about him as a very peaceful teacher – the kind of warm-hearted person that we love to learn from. So why was Jesus so mad?
People who study the Bible have talked about how the people selling things in the temple were charging people way too much and it made Jesus very sad. Many people who came to the temple would not have had very much money, so Jesus didn’t think it was very fair that they were being charged so much for things. He also thought that buying and selling things distracted people from praying and worshiping God.
The people who Jesus chased away weren’t very happy about losing their money – in fact, they told a group called the Pharisees about what Jesus had done to try and get Jesus in trouble. Sometimes doing the right thing can be very hard, and people may even try to get you in trouble for doing it, but Jesus shows us that it’s important to do things to help people instead of focusing on earning money.
Reflection: Do you think Jesus did the right thing? Should people should be allowed to sell things in church? What is the most important part about coming to church for you?
Prayer: Dear God, help me to treat everyone with respect and love. Amen
