Day 13 - Wednesday
Bible Verses: Luke 9:28-36
Spark Bible: The Transfiguration (p.359)
Devotion: Transformation is a big word. It means to alter or change something from one thing into another. This is an amazing story where Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain to pray. However, at one point, Peter, James, and John fell asleep, but when they woke up, they saw that Jesus had been transformed. His face was different now and his clothes were a bright, bright white. Have you ever walked outside on a sunny winter day when the sun is shining so brightly on the snow that you have trouble keeping your eyes open? That’s what it must have been like for Peter, James, and John on top of that mountain when they woke up from their sleep. Jesus had been transformed.
This day marked a moment of change, not just for Jesus, but for the disciples, as well. When the three of them woke up and saw Jesus transformed, something also happened to them. Soon after, a giant cloud covered the mountain and they heard God’s voice speaking to them. God said, “This is my son, my chosen one; listen to him!” That day was a turning point for them and they saw their teacher in a new way and with a deeper understanding that Jesus was claimed by God.
Reflection : How does God speak to us? When people from our church go on mission trips to assist building houses and churches in other communities, they help to transform those buildings into something beautiful and useful. Can you think of ways to help transform the lives of others by helping them or serving them? What are some ways we can help the homeless? How can we help friends in need?
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for what happened on the mountain. Thank you for making bright lights and for giving us Jesus. Amen.
