While many of us experienced the joys of opening Advent Calendars growing up (and the usually terrible chocolate inside), the Advent calendar can be used for more than just building anticipation. The season of Advent can be used to create new habits and patterns just like the season of Lent... plus it's easier to get motivated by the Christmas spirit than by the somber time of Lent! There are a couple of options that I've appreciated for families:
- Some families choose to pair the opening of an Advent calendar with a short devotional book. There are certainly plenty of great options out there for adults, but if you're looking to do one together as family then I'd encourage you to check out the Family Devotions page on this website!
- Other families choose to pair the opening of an Advent calendar with acts of service that one or all members of the family could do. Shortly before Advent you can spend time brainstorming with your kids about options of things you could do to be of help - for an example of 24 potential options, check out Home Song Blog's Advent page.
